What I Ate Wednesday #11

Happy Wednesday! As promised, in this week’s W.I.A.W post I am going to share with you some of the highlights from this years Healthy Living Summit in Boston! Most of the amazing bloggers who attended this weekend have broken their posts down into 3 different days, but I am going to give you a quick overview so that I can share some more fabulous recipes with you this week!

I arrived at The Hyatt Regency Hotel in Cambridge, MA around 6pm on Thursday night. I wanted to be there a day early so that I could be situated and relax before the excitement began on Friday afternoon! Thursday night I spent settling into my room, hitting up the local Trader Joe’s and working on Friday’s blog post!

Dinner: ground turkey breast, carrots, avocado, tomato, mushrooms, ricotta, sunflower seeds and butter lettuce

Friday morning I got up and had a nice 6 mile run in the hotel gym! Then I came back to my room, made some breakfast and relaxed on my big fluffy bed for a few hours before I headed downstairs to meet the group for Zumba in the park! Aundra from Fit For Life, headed up the class. She was absolutely amazing! We had such a great time being outside, in the shade with an amazing breeze! I also met some great girls; Becki from Fighting For Wellness, Melanie from Beautifully Nutty and Kristen from Shore to Run, plus some of the girls from Wild Harvest who were sponsoring our event! It was a great time!

Post Zumba group!

After Zumba I headed back to my room and made a quick lunch before headed downstairs to our first event at 2:30pm. this event was headed up by Derek of Greatest.com. He had some great advice on how to make your blog site grow. Some tips he offered were to: 1) have a vision and a mission, 2) know your voice, 3) know your audience and 4) be consistent. It was a very inspirational and eye opening start to the weekend!

We also received an insane amount of swag in our HLS12 swag bags! I was in shock at how many great things we were given! Plus, we also received a super comfy t-shirt from Bamboo and some amazing sneakers from Reebok! I could barely carry all the free gifts we got! The sponsors were extremely nice and more than generous with the gifts they gave us!

All that swag!! Headbands, granola bars, cereal, berry strainer, drinks, food, food, food and more food! Plus lip gloss, face cream and tons of coupons!

After the registration, swag bag pick up and opening session with Greatest, I joined the group on a walking tour of Boston. We walked down to Fenway Park (Go Red Sox) and then back. Although, I have been to Boston more times in my life than I can count, it was nice to just take a walk with some great girls and enjoy the fresh air.

When we got back I headed up to my room to make something to eat, shower and get ready for the cocktail party. The party was sponsored by Rebootize! They had music, tons of food, games, a photo booth and a cash bar! It was a great time for everyone to just walk around and mingle with other bloggers. I met some great people that night; Rachel from Ready To Get Sweaty and Chase from The Chase Project. Around 9pm I headed back up to my room so I could rest and relax before the big day on Saturday!

Saturday was an action packed day! I woke up nice and early and got in my 6 mile run before heading back down to my room for a quick shower and to throw on some workout clothes for out 9:30am crossfit workout. Before that though, Wild Harvest sponsored and served a bunch of great recipes for breakfast! They also had a recipe contest during the summer in which one of the bloggers could submit a recipe and have it featured at the breakfast. Kelly from Cupcake Kelly’s won the challenge! Congrats Kelly!

At 9:30 we had a mini crossfit workout with the folks from Reebok in Canton, MA. They explained to us what Crossfit was, demonstrated the exercises (with proper form, of course!) and then put us to the test! We had to do AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) of 10 squats and 15 jumps in 5 minutes! Let me tell you, my quads and calves were ON FIRE!! It’s amazing how changing up your workout really tests your endurance!

What is CrossFit?

After our workout we had about a half hour to freshen up (I made some food) and then head downstairs to start our sessions! This is when I learned sooo much! The first session I went to was about taking good photographs (because we all know how horrible my current pics are!). I definitely learned a lot! I also learned I need to invest in a DSLR camera…..let’s just say I already started my Christmas list (hint, hint BF) ;).

My next session was on blog design. I learned a great deal of information here too, but a lot of it was pointless for me because I have recently decided to go self hosted and luckily won’t have to be dealing with a lot of that stuff! Thank goodness! But it was extremely informative for those who aren’t going that route!

After that we had a break for lunch! And boy did they serve up a lot of food! I don’t know if they were trying to refuel us or put us in a food coma! πŸ˜‰

After lunch we had our next session, which was headed up by Wild Harvest. I was super excited for this session because they talked about recipe development, how they work with dietitians to create the healthy foods they sell, how to reinvent a recipe and more! Clearly, this was right up my alley! I loved every second of it! I could have sat there for hours…..I was even having visions of going to Minnesota to visit these great ladies! πŸ˜‰

My next session was on blogging in your neighborhood. It was about making connections in your area, starting blogging groups and other ways in which you can network, make friends, grow your blog, and open yourself up to potential job opportunities. I think this was one of the most informative! It definitely had my wheels spinning with all the ways I could connect here in NJ!

Our last session was about social media. At this point, I was pretty much drained for the day! I definitely learned a lot about the importance of twitter, instagram and facebook in relation to blogging. But the technical part of this session was over my head at this point! I wish my focus had been a little bit more in tune, but honestly, this day took a lot out of me!

We finished up the day with closing remarks and a raffle! I was super excited because I won the first prize….A year long subscription to Healthy Living Blogs! Yes!! How excited am I! I love winning things!

Throughout the day we also had a ton of companies with tables that had helped sponsor our event!! Driscolls Berries also did a contest to see how many berries were in this big jar!!

The day ended at 5:00pm, at which time I headed back up to my room and passed out! I was so exhausted from the day that I couldn’t make it into the night! haha I slept for a bit and then headed over to Whole Foods to grab some healthy eats for dinner! Then I just relaxed in my room and watched some TV (food network, of course) before heading off to LaLa Land!

Sunday morning was the conclusion of the weekend. At 8:00am we all headed out for a 5k fun run/walk. I walked along with some of the other great girls I had met over the weekend. We chatted about our blogs, things we learned over the weekend and enjoyed the view of The Charles River and the cool morning breeze! It was the best weather all summer!

After the walk, they served breakfast. Again, it was a buffet of amazing eats! Following breakfast was some round table discussions, but I decided to skip this part in favor of getting on the road to miss the NYC traffic. I was exhausted from the weekend and kept thinking about getting home to take a nice long nap! The ride went very smooth, with barely any traffic and when I arrived home, it was nappy time for this girl! I ended the day by spending some time with the bf, who I missed so much! It was nice to finally be home again! I think I am done traveling for awhile!

And that quickly (believe it or not) sums up the weekend! I had such a blast, met tons of great people and can’t wait to return again next year! I will just make sure to get in some extra sleep before I go! πŸ˜‰

  1. I love reading all the recaps of this year’s HLS! How badly do I want to be there next year?? I love that you packed clean snacks–I ALWAYS pack food with me on trips (just to be prepared!)– and hit up Trader Joes when you got there. That store is heaven!   2. My weekend’s been pretty cool here in San Francisco, but no cool swag like you’ve been getting! Haha, I am super jealous, and I hope they keep doing HLS until I’m old enough to start going! πŸ˜‰
    Maybe we could be roomies and look for a race to run together for that week, too. lol!

    • I am so happy you’re having a good time! You could go next year! There was a 15yr old girl there with her mom this year! She was so sweet! And trust me, with all the exercise they have planned, your legs wouldn’t be able to handle a race the same week! They really jam it all in! I was exhausted for 2 days after! haha but then again, I’m old!

            Ha, I’ve been trying to do that.. but hubs won’t listen to any ideas! boo! I even went as far as seeing what the Athens airport (we have a layover there) has to offer for food so I can play my early lunch there.. it’s terrible!!
